Wartburg Opens Season 2-0

CLERMONT, Fla.—The Wartburg softball team opened its 2017 campaign with two wins Sunday. The Knights run-ruled Augustana (Ill.) 10-2 in the opener and defeated Otterbein 9-5 in the second game of the day.

The Orange and Black took the 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by junior Mara Forsyth (Charles City).

The Vikings plated their only two runs in the second on two RBI singles. Wartburg regained the lead at 6-2 in the bottom of the frame with five runs on three hits.

The Knights scored one in the fourth on an RBI double by sophomore Hannah Onken (Jefferson) and sealed the victory with four consecutive singles with two outs to score the final three runs.

Senior Kimberly Wedeking (Clarksville) pitched the complete game to earn her first win of the season. Forsyth and sophomore Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) each went 2-3.

The second game started on a different note as Otterbein took the early 4-0 lead after its first at-bats. Wartburg plated one in the second on an RBI single from sophomore Madison Rentschler (Marion) and evened the score in the third at 4-4 which included a three-run double from Forsyth.

The Knights used a five-run fourth inning which included a two-run single from Forsyth.

The Cardinals scored their final run of the game in the fifth on an RBI groundout.

Sophomore Brenna Gray (Waterloo) threw a complete game to earn the win. Forsyth went 2-3 with a career-high five RBIs.
