CLERMONT, Fla.--- The Wartburg softball team moved to 5-1 on the season as it won both games on its spring break trip Wednesday. The Knights defeated Johnson and Wales 4-2 and Saint Mary's (Minn.) 3-2.
In the first game, senior Taylor Smola (Stevens Point, Wis.) gave the Orange and Black the early lead with her solo homerun in the second inning. Wartburg doubled its margin in the third on an RBI single from junior Erica Countryman (Plainfield, Ill.).
The Knights plated an additional run in the fourth and the fifth. The Wildcats scored their only two runs in the sixth.
Sophomore Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) went 2-4 and senior Kimberly Wedeking (Clarksville) pitched the complete game and struck out five.
In the final game of the day, a similar story rang true as the Orange and Black took the 2-0 lead in their first at-bats as Wedeking had an RBI double and she scored on Smola's groundout.
Saint Mary's plated one in the bottom of the first and second. A Cardinals baserunner did not advance past second for the duration of the game.
Smola scored the eventual game-winning run in the fourth on freshman Emily Smille's (Parker, Colo.) ground out.
Wedeking went 2-4 and O'Brien went 2-3. Sophomore Brenna Gray (Waterloo) earned the complete game win and fanned two.
Wartburg returns to the field tomorrow.
