Softball Sweeps Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill.- The Wartburg softball team moved its winning streak to three in its 2-1 and 9-7 sweep over Wheaton Ill. Saturday. The Knights are now 10-4 on the season.

In the first game, the Thunder took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and the Orange and Black evened the score in the third.

Sophomore Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) scored the eventual game-winning run on senior Kimberly Wedeking's (Clarksville) groundout in the sixth.

Defensively, Wartburg did not allow a Wheaton base runner past first base after the second inning.

Junior Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) went 3-3 in her first game on the field this year, returning after helping the Knights to the NCAA Tournament in women's basketball. Roby-Miklus went 2-2 and Wedeking earned the complete game win in the circle as she struck out eight.

In the finale, the Thunder again took the early lead, this time 2-0 after the first. The Orange and Black used a five-run third inning which included a two-run homer by senior Taylor Smola (Stevens Point, Wis.). Wartburg plated two in the fourth to make the game 7-2.

Wheaton scored a run in the fourth and fifth which made the score 7-4. Both squads plated a run in the sixth and the Knights scored one in the seventh to make it 9-5.

The Thunder compiled a rally in their last at-bats on a two-run triple to whittle the margin to two. The next two batters were retired to seal the victory for the Orange and Black.

Sophomore Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) went 3-3 and classmate Brenna Gray (Waterloo) earned the complete game win and fanned six.

Wartburg returns to the field next Saturday at Washington University in St. Louis' tournament.
