ST. LOUIS-- The Wartburg softball team (11-5 overall) split its games at the WashU Tournament Sunday. The Knights won their opener 3-1 over Webster, but fell 7-0 to host-WashU in their final game.
The Gorloks took the early 1-0 lead with a leadoff homerun. That remained the score until the sixth inning when the Orange and Black scored all three of their runs, which included a two-run homer by senior Kimberly Wedeking (Clarksville).
Wedeking went 2-3 and picked up the complete game win in the circle. She struck out seven in the outing, one shy of her career best.
The Bears took the 5-0 lead after their first at-bats and tallied their final two runs in the fifth. Defensively, WashU did not allow a baserunner past second. Sophomore Brenna Gray (Waterloo) went 2-3 and also pitched the complete game.
Wartburg returns to the field Tuesday when it hosts St. Catherine's in a twin bill for its home opener.
