Wartburg Swept by St. Catherine

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (11-7 overall) fell to St. Catherine (12-6) in its home opener Tuesday. The Wildcats claimed the opener, 2-0, as the Knights compiled three hits, and the finale, 6-4.

Senior Kimberly Wedeking (Clarksville) pitched the complete game in the first game and allowed only five hits and one earned run. At the plate, she had one of the three total hits.

The second game started rolling in the top of the fourth where St. Catherine recorded three runs. Wartburg answered when junior Mara Forsyth (Charles City) hit a home run over the left field fence which also drove in Wedeking.

The Wildcats added one more in the top of the fifth to make it 4-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Wedeking opened with a home run over center field to bring the Knights within one run at 4-3.

St. Catherine plated its final two runs in the seventh to make the score 6-3.

Wartburg began a comeback with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Erica Countryman (Plainfield, Ill.) scored on Forsyth's two-out single. Unfortunately, the Knights could not take advantage of the loaded bases and fell 6-4.

Wedeking finished 2-4 and Forsyth went 2-3 with three RBIs.

Sophomore Brenna Gray (Waterloo) pitched the complete second game and allowed seven hits and three earned runs.

Wartburg will look to get back to its winning ways Thursday when it travels to UW-Platteville Thursday at 5 p.m.
