Softball Splits Sunday, Two Named All-Tournament

LEXINGTON, Ky.-- The Wartburg softball team moved to 8-4 on the season as it fell 9-6 to Trine in its first game, but defeated DePauw, 9-8, in the consolation final of the Transylvania Tournament Sunday.

Junior Mara Forsyth (Charles City) and senior Kimberly Wedeking (Clarksville) were named to the All-Tournament team.

In the first game of the day, the Knights took the early 1-0 lead in the first over Trine as Wedeking had a double, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. The Thunder answered with four runs in the frame on as many hits to make the score 4-1.

The Orange and Black plated two in the second and third innings to regain the 5-4 lead. Senior Taylor Smola (Stevens Point, Wis.) had a two-run double in the third. Trine scored three in the fourth to take the 7-5 lead and Wartburg plated its final run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly. The Thunder used a two-run homer for its final runs in the fifth to make it 9-6.

In the rematch against DePauw (the teams met Saturday in the round robin portion), DePauw led 5-0 after its first three at-bats. The Knights then compiled a three-run inning on an RBI double from Forsyth who then scored on Smola's homer to centerfield.

The Tigers used back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth to make the score 7-3, but Forsyth's two-run shot in the bottom of the frame brought the Orange and Black within two at 7-5. Wartburg took the 9-7 lead in the sixth on four runs which included a three-run shot by Wedeking.

After a leadoff walk and a stolen base by DePauw, the next three batters were retired in order to halt the rally and seal the win for the Knights as they capped off their annual Spring Break trip.

The Orange and Black return to the field Saturday when they host St. Catherine's for a twinbill that begins at 1 p.m.
