Knights Sweep Storm

INDIANOLA, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (17-11 overall, 5-3 IIAC) swept Simpson (5-21, 0-8) 7-1 and 8-0 in six innings Wednesday.

Junior Mara Forsyth (Charles City) gave the Knights the early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the first game with her two-run home run to left field.

The Storm plated their only run of the day in the second on an RBI double.

The Orange and Black tallied two in the fourth and three in the fifth to make it 7-1.

Forsyth went 2-3 with three runs and two RBIs while senior Kimberly Wedeking (Clarksville) earned the complete game win and struck out four.

Senior Taylor Smola (Stevens Point, Wis.) hit her first of two home runs in the second game with her solo shot to centerfield. Wartburg plated three in the third to extend its margin to 4-0.

Smola slugged her second round tripper of the game with her two-run home run, again to centerfield which made the score 7-0. Sophomore Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) drove in classmate Liz Roby Miklus (Ankeny) on her single to short for the eighth run.

The Storm were unable to score in the bottom of the frame to give the run rule win to the Knights.

Smola's two home runs tied the single game school record. She finished 3-3 with two runs and four RBIs. Sophomore Brenna Gray (Waterloo) earned the complete game win and struck out three.

The Orange and Black return home to host Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday at 1 p.m.
