WAVERLY, Iowa - The Wartburg softball team (19-11, 7-3 IIAC) won both games against Nebraska Wesleyan (16-14, 3-7), 9-1 and 12-4. in six innings from walk-off hits by junior Mara Forsyth (Charles City).
The Knights seized the lead in the opener as they scored three in the first inning of the first game and never relinquished the lead. Senior Kimberly Wedeking (Clarksville) hit an RBI double to left center and Forsyth had a double down the right field line to score another. Forsyth later scored on sophomore Brenna Gray's (Waterloo) single.
In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Madison Rentschler (Marion) came into pinch hit and took the first pitch over the left field fence to give the Orange and Black a 6-1 lead. Later in the same inning, Forsyth knocked a two-run single to right center which gave Wartburg the 9-1 lead which ended the game on the eight-run rule.
Wedeking pitched her way to her 12th win of the season and 13th complete game. She had four strikeouts and allowed only four hits. Forsyth finished 2-3, including a double and the walk-off with three RBIs. Sophomore Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) and Wedeking went 3-4 and two steals. Sophomore Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) had three steals and two runs.
In the second game, the Knights kept the offense rolling right from the start. Forsyth hit a RBI triple to the center field fence to give the Knights the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Prairie Wolves responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Knights' lead down to one, making it 5-4. In the bottom of the frame, Roby Miklus hit an RBI triple and eventually scored to add on to the Knights score, 7-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Orange and Black led 9-4 when Forsyth came up to the plate. She took a full-count pitch over the left field fence to score the final three runs and end the game once more on the eight-run rule.
Forsyth finished 3-4 finished a single shy of the cycle with a double, triple, and a home run, and four RBIs. Grey recorded her 10th complete game and notched her seventh win. She also went 2-3 and had two steals. Roby Miklus was 2-3 and Wedeking was 2-4 with a home run.
Wartburg will host Coe Saturday at 1 p.m.
