Knights Split with Duhawks

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Wartburg softball team (15-11 overall, 3-3 IIAC) split against Loras (18-6, 4-2) in two high-scoring games Saturday.

In the second game, the Knights completed an 8-5 comeback capped off by a three-run homer by junior Mara Forsyth (Charles City).

Loras won the first game by a score of 13-9, as it scored six in the top of the seventh, in a matchup that saw 22 runs scored between the teams including five home runs combined.

The Knights were quiet for the most part through three innings, but compiled six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the 7-4 lead. Sophomore Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) had a two-run double and Forsyth had a two-run homer in the frame.

Going into the seventh, Wartburg led Loras 9-7. The Duhawks scored six off five hits, which included a two-run home run The Orange and Black were unable to compile a rally, to give the first game to the visitors.

O'Brien went 2-4 with a double and 2 RBIs, while sophomore Madison Renschler (Marion) went 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Senior Kim Wedeking (Clarksville) pitched the complete game and had five strikeouts.

Wartburg found itself down 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning but scored two as senior Taylor Smola (Stevens Point, Wis.) and twin sisters Katie and Kristie Sommer (Marion) all hit consecutive doubles.

In the bottom of the fifth, Forsyth hit an RBI double and eventually scored to tie the game at 5-5.

This remained the score through the top of the seventh as Loras was retired in order. Forsyth won the game with her walkoff three-run homer over the left field fence. She finished the game 2-4 with a double and a home run including four RBIs.

Wedeking went 3-4 with a double and a RBI, while sophomore Brenna Grey (Waterloo) pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and earned her fifth win of the season.

The Knights will travel to face Simpson Wednesday at 3 p.m.
