SAUGET, Ill.-- Senior Jacob Thumann (DeWitt) tied the single season school record with his 13th home run of the year in the top of the first. This tied the mark set by Wartburg Athletics Hall of Fame member Matt Thede during the 2000 season.
Wartburg (32-13 overall) fell 8-3 to North Central (27-16) Friday. Thumann had a three-run homer over the left field fence to give the Knights the early 3-0 lead in the first.
In their first at-bats, the Cardinals plated two on consecutive RBI groundouts to make it 3-2. North Central had the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run of their own which made it 4-3.
The Cardinals used an RBI single in the fourth and two scored on a hit and two-base error in the fifth to make the score 7-3. The final run scored on a single to short.
Junior Zach Hovick (Roland) went 3-4 and Thumann finished 2-5 with three RBIs.
The Orange and Black will now face Washington University in St. Louis Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in an elimination game. This is a rematch of last year's elimination game.
