Katie Sommer Becomes Career Leader in Assists in Victory over Central

WAVERLY, Iowa-- Senior Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) became Wartburg's career leader in assists Wednesday in the 86-44 win over Central. She broke a 32-year old school record, previously set by LeAnn Bollum at 419 from 1981-85. Sommer surpassed the mark in the second quarter, as she needed three to tie the mark entering the contest. Her record-setting assist was on a jump shot by senior Aryn Jones (Marion) with 6:55 left in the frame.

With the victory, the Knights move to 12-0 on the season and 3-0 in IIAC games, while the Dutch are now 7-6, 2-2.

The Orange and Black led 20-3 after the first quarter. Both teams scored 18 in the second frame, but Wartburg took the 38-21 lead into halftime.

Jones led the team with 16 points. Sophomore Emma Gerdes (Cedar Falls) and senior Miranda Murphy (Alleman) each had 11 to round out the players in double digits. Murphy led the team on the glass with eight rebounds.

Every player that dressed for the Knights saw playing time in the contest.

Sommer finished with nine assists, just one shy of her single game career high.

The Orange and Black held the advantages in field goal percentage (.486 vs. .263), three-point field goal percentage (.448 vs. .208), rebounds (48-36) which included 13-9 on the offensive glass, assists (28-7), blocks (5-2), and steals (8-5).

This marks the third time the program has started the season 12-0 under head coach Bob Amsberry, and second-straight season. Wartburg has also won its last 14-straight home games, a streak that dates back to last year's Holiday Tournament, against then-No. 5/6 Washington University-St. Louis.

The Knights take to the road this weekend against Coe Saturday at 2 p.m.
