WAVERLY, Iowa – The weather may have been cold, but that couldn't cool own the red-hot Wartburg College Knights women's soccer team, as they displayed dominance on both sides of the ball in defeating Simpson College Storm 5-0 on homecoming evening.
The Knights (12-4-1 overall, 6-1-1 A-R-C) got things started in the 15th minute of the match when senior forward Nicole Adair (Reinbeck) scored the first goal of the game off of a penalty kick. Thirteen minutes later, fellow senior forward Morgan Finch (Grinnell) scored her second goal of the year in a scrum in front of the Simpson goal. The Knights would take the 2-0 lead into the half. The Knights continued to add pressure onto Simpson goalie Zoe Seiler, but would fail to score again as the half would come to a close with the Knights up 2-0.
The stats at the break showed just how dominate the Knights were performing. The Knights attempted 23 first-half shots, compared to the Storm's zero. The Knights kept the Storm (4-11, 2-5) off of the Knight's side of the field for pretty much the entire half.
The dominate performance would carry into the second half, where the Knights would add on to their lead with a goal from sophomore Anna Rood (Ames) that came off of a Jillian Huser (Waverly) assist. Following Rood's goal was sophomore mid Molly Close (Polk City), who scored her third goal of the season off of a header that came from a corner kick from Adair, her sixth of the season. The Knights fifth and last goal of the night came from senior Ali Morrow (Swisher), who scored her first goal of the year after receiving a pass from freshmen mid Kara Dobbs (Westminster, Colo.). The assist marks the first of Dobbs career in the Black and Orange. In total the Knights attempted 42 shots to the Storm's one.
Freshmen goalkeeper Marissa Lopez (Ankeny) picked up her 10th win of the year after playing in the game's first 60 minutes. Junior goalie Hayley Krogh (Huson) replaced Lopez midway through the second period, getting the junior some valuable time throughout the contest.
The Knights will now await the results of other American Rivers Conference teams as the A-R-C Tournament looms, which will begin
