WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College Knights (4-0 overall) defeated the Doane University Tigers (1-8) after coming back from being down 13 points in the first half of the game.
The Knights got off to a slow start, trailing by 13 at 23-10 through the game's first nine minutes. The Knights slowly scratched their way back into the match after closing out the first half on a 21-9 run to trail by one (32-31) at the break.
The Knights first lead of the night came at the 15:16 minute mark in the second half, when senior guard
Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) hit one of his three three-pointers on the night to bring the Knights up 41-40. Doane responded by scoring 10 points over the next four minutes to lead the Orange and Black 53-47 with 11:28 to go.
With 5:38 left to play, the Knights trailed the Tigers by two at 58-56 before head coach Dick Peth subbed in senior guard
Jaran Sabus (Urbandale). Sabus would go on to score 11 of the Knights final 13 points to lead Wartburg to a come-from-behind victory, defeating the Tigers 72-61 and advancing the Knights to 4-0 on the season.
Sabus led all scorers with 25 points on seven of 10 shooting (70%), including scoring 10 points after hitting 10 of his 11 free throw shots (90.9%). Sabus moved up to 27
th all-time in program history for scoring (1,108) after his performance. Sabus trails 26
th place by four (1,112).
Kickbush finished with 13 points on five of 11 shooting (45.4%), including going 3-5 on treys (60%). He also matched career highs with five assists and one block. Senior center
Josh Gehling (Dyersville) added 12 points on six of 10 shooting (60%).
The Knights won the battle in in all shooting statistical categories, rebounds (30-26), and steals (9-1).
The Knights will return to the home hardwood Saturday, Nov. 24 when they will welcome in the Dordt College Defenders (6-2) with tip-off at 5 p.m.
