LAS VEGAS—The No. 23/24 Wartburg women's basketball team (7-2 overall) trailed No. 20/22 Randolph Macon by one (31-30) at halftime, but a strong second half effort sealed the comeback win Monday at the Las Vegas Hoopla Tournament.
Sophomore Payton Draper (Waverly) scored a layup on a pass from junior Amanda Brainerd (DeWitt) to with 10 seconds left in the first half to narrowly trail by one at halftime.
The Knights opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run in the first three and a half minutes to take the lead for good. The Orange and Black would score 25 in the frame and 22 in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Wartburg led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter.
Junior Emma Gerdes (Cedar Falls) led the team with 15 points. Three teammates, senior Adrienne Boettger (Cedar Falls), Brainerd, and sophomore Kaitlyn Volesky (Mount Vernon) joined her in double figures with 13, 12, and 10 points, respectively.
Sophomore Tori Hazard (Janesville) narrowly missed a double-double as she had nine points and as many rebounds.
The Knights scored 23 of their total points on fast breaks.
The Orange and Black will conclude their competition at this tournament tomorrow when they face Cabrini at noon Pacific.
