No. 2/2 Knights Prevail 54-53 Over Kohawks

WAVERLY, Iowa-- Coe's last second three-point attempt fell short to give No. 2/2 Wartburg the 54-53 win Wednesday. The Knights remain undefeated at 24-0 on the season and 15-0 in Iowa Conference games, while the Kohawks are 13-11, 5-10.

After a free throw by senior Aryn Jones (Marion) gave the Orange and Black the one-point lead with seven seconds to play, Coe called timeout and chose to advance the ball to its side of the court, to attempt one last comeback.

Wartburg chose to foul twice, which meant the Kohawks had the ball with just under three seconds remaining. Coe wasn't able to set up a clean shot as its trey attempt hit the rim to give the Knights the win.

Senior Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) had a team-best 14 points, while Jones and classmate Miranda Murphy (Alleman) each finished with 11 points. Jones and senior Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) co-led the team on the glass with seven rebounds

The Kohawks led early in the game, 12-5, with 2:29 left in the first quarter. The Orange and Black fought back as the score was tied three times in the second frame, which included 30 all at halftime.

The second half remained tight, as the score was tied seven more times, which included 53-53 with 1:01 remaining Jones made the second of her two free throw attempts to give Wartburg the eventual win.

The Knights have earned the top seed in the conference tournament and will host an opponent (to be determined) next Thursday.

The Orange and Black conclude the regular season Saturday at Central at 2 p.m.
