Junior Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) led all scorers with 23 points, which also set a new career-best. His previous mark was 22 set against Nebraska Wesleyan on Feb. 10.
Wartburg led 44-37 at halftime. The Storm used a strong second half as they whittled the margin to two (72-70) with 1:43 remaining. Junior Josh Gehling (Dyersville) doubled the lead with his layup, but Simpson answered with a layup on its next possession to make it a two-point game once more with 0:52 to go.
The Storm called timeout with 0:15 left. An unsuccessful three-point attempt was rebounded by Kickbush who was immediately fouled. Kickbush made both free throws to make it 76-72 as Simpson got the ball back with less than two seconds on the clock. The Storm chose to heave the ball at the rim from beyond half court for its last possession.
The Knights owned the advantages in all three team shooting percentage categories and rebounds (41-28).
