Herman's Career Day, Strong Second Half Helps Wartburg Defeat Simpson

WAVERLY, Iowa-- Senior Sawyer Herman (Monticello) scored a career-high 28 points to help Wartburg (13-8 overall, 6-6 IIAC) defeat Simpson (11-10, 7-6) 85-77 Saturday. He surpassed his previous mark of 26 points, set against Graceland back in November. Herman finished with a perfect free throw percentage for the 14th time in his career.

Junior Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) had 24 points on the day, which included 20 in the second half alone. Classmate Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) rounded out the leading scorers with 19 points.

Junior Josh Gehling (Dyersville) led the team on the glass with nine rebounds.

The Storm took the narrow 39-38 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. The score was tied five times in the second half, which included 70 all with 7:39 to play.

The Knights opened a 5-0 run over the next minute to regain the lead for good. The Orange and Black made all of their free throws down the stretch to put it out of reach.

Wartburg owned all team shooting percentage categories, rebounds (38-35), assists (18-16), and blocks (3-2).

The teams earned the season split, as each program won on its home court.

The Knights take to the road Wednesday at Luther.
