WHEATON, Ill.-- The Wartburg softball team (9-5 overall) moved its winning streak to four in the sweep over Wheaton (3-11) Saturday. The Knights won 6-3 and 5-2 in eight innings.
In the first game, the Orange and Black took the early 2-0 lead in the first as junior Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) plated classmate Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) and then O'Brien later scored on senior Mara Forsyth's (Charles City) single to left.
Wartburg doubled its lead in the next frame on Roby-Miklus' triple and she scored on a Thunder fielding error. Wheaton trimmed the margin to one with a three-run second inning.
The Knights added a run in the fourth on an RBI groundout and in the sixth on another fielding error.
Junior Madison Rentschler (Marion) went 2-3 and O'Brien was 2-4.
In the second game, a similar story rang true as the Orange and Black jumped to the 2-0 lead in the first. The Thunder scored one in the bottom of the frame and again in the fifth to knot the game at two all.
Neither team was able to score over the next two innings, to send it into extras.
Colen hit a leadoff double and was driven in by freshman Madison Stoaks' (Clive) two-run double to right center field, which made it 4-2. Stoaks later crossed the plate on O'Brien's single.
In its final at-bat, Wheaton had bases loaded with two outs. The next batter lined out to third to end the rally attempt.
Senior Erica Countryman (Plainfield, Ill.) went 3-4 and freshman Lauren Reicks (Cresco) earned her fourth win of the season in the circle.
Wartburg continues its road trip tomorrow at Aurora for a doubleheader.
