Knights Hold Off Rally to Defeat Monks 9-6

LAKE MYRTLE, Fla.-- The Wartburg baseball team (5-1 overall) moved its winning streak to four as it stopped a late rally by Saint Joseph's (Maine) to win 9-6 Wednesday.

The Monks took the 1-0 lead after their first at-bats but the Knights evened it in the third as freshman JoJo McNair (Joliet, Ill.) scored on a double from senior Eric Willis (Waverly). The Orange and Black extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth. Senior Cody Hyler (Des Moines) hit a leadoff triple and scored on the next batter, classmate David Fitzgerald's (Dubuque), double to center field. Senior Blake Mahoney (Des Moines) plated Fitzgerald and McNair on his double to left.

The Orange and Black extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth on a sac fly from Fitzgerald. Saint Joseph's sliced the lead to one on a two-run double in the bottom of the frame.

Pinch hitter freshman Ryan King Jr. (Joliet, Ill.) gave Wartburg the 8-3 lead with his two-run double in the seventh. The Monks answered again with a two-run double of their own in the bottom of the inning, to make it 8-5.

Willis scored the final run for the Knights as he capitalized on throwing errors.

In the bottom of the ninth, after the leadoff batter struck out, the next guy hit a triple and scored on the next batter's single to make it 9-6. Saint Joseph's later had bases loaded with two outs. Fortunately, the threat was ended with a flyout to short.

Senior Clint Kannegieter (Aplington) went 2-4 and sophomore Ben Milewski (Lake Villa, Ill.) got the win with his six complete innings of work and nine strikeouts.

The Orange and Black are off Thursday.
