Knights Split with Duhawks

DUBUQUE, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (12-10 overall, 2-4 IIAC) split the doubleheader with Loras Saturday. The Duhawks won the opener 10-8, but the Knights won the finale, 5-1.

Loras led 2-0 after two, but the Orange and Black used a four-run fourth inning to take the 4-2 lead. This included a two-run home run by senior Mara Forsyth (Charles City). She has now tied the career mark of 29, interesting set by current Loras head coach Ashley Winter (Rogers) in 2009.

The lead exchanged hands over the teams' next two trips to the plate. The Duhawks plated three in the fourth on a three-run homer, before Wartburg scored three in the fifth to make it 7-5 in favor of the visitors.

Loras tallied five in the sixth to take the 10-7 lead. Senior Erica Countryman (Plainfield, Ill.) hit a leadoff double in the seventh, and later scored on Forsyth's single, for the final run of the game.

Countryman finished 4-4 with three runs, and Forsyth was 3-4 with two runs and four RBIs.

In the finale, the Knights jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first on two hits. The Duhawks hit a leadoff home run in their at-bats in the bottom of the frame, which turned out to be their only run of the game.

Junior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) scored on Forsyth's single in the second and Forsyth capitalized on fielding errors for the final run in the seventh.

Countryman finished 2-3 in this game and freshman Maddie Rog (Norridge, Ill.) pitched the complete game and fanned four.

The Orange and Black return to action next Tuesday at St. Catherine.
