ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The Wartburg College Knights (2-1 overall) suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the College of Saint Benedict (1-2 overall) by a score of 3-2 in a tightly contested game that was decided in overtime.
Forwards
Joy Smith (Polk City) and
Nicole Adair (Reinbeck) both scored a goal for Wartburg, but the combination of Saint Benedict's Clara Noack (two goals) and Laurel Poole (one goal) proved to be too much to handle.
Heading into the match's final 10 minutes of regulation, Saint Benedict held a 2-1 lead over Wartburg. Wartburg had been struggling to get a good shot on goal, but a cornerkick by senior
forward Alyssa Drewelow (Cedar Rapids) in the game's 83
rd minute, which led to an assist seconds later, helped set up the late game-tying goal by
Nicole Adair.
Wartburg would take three shots in the final five minutes of regulation, but couldn't find the net. Saint Benedict would go on to score the game-winning goal in the eighth minute of overtime, sealing the win and sending Wartburg back on the road.
Wartburg will finish its road trip this Sunday, Sept. 9, in St. Peter, Minn., where they will face Gustavus Adolphus College (2-1 overall). The Knights are 2-8 all-time versus Gustavus Adolphus College.
