PELLA, IA – The Wartburg College men's basketball team (8-5 overall, 2-2 A-R-C) scored a season-high 102 points in its 102-85 victory over Central College Dutch (4-9, 1-3) on Saturday evening.
The Dutch got on the board first and led for a majority of the first half until the Knights took a two-point lead with 4:05 left to play in the first half off of a basket by senior guard
Jaran Sabus (Urbandale). Junior guard
Camry Moore (Waverly), who scored a career-high nine points, connected on back-to-back layups before the half to give the Knights a 47-41 lead going into the break.
Wartburg would jump out to a 13-point lead after senior center
Josh Gehling (Dyersville) connected on a layup with 17:36 left to play in the second half. The Orange and Black would continue to lead throughout the second half, leading by as much as 17 points before securing their season-high 102 points in the 102-85 victory.
Leading the team in scoring was Sabus, who scored 28 points on 10 of 19 shooting (53% FG). Trailing Sabus was sophomore guard
Max Smith Drahos (Cedar Rapids), who notched career highs in points (24), field goals (10) and three-pointers (3). Senior guard
Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) rounded out the group by scoring 22 points on a career-high seven three-pointers. Gehling and junior guard
Tyler Zumbach (Anamosa)
led the team in rebounding with seven rebounds apiece.
Sabus' 28 points placed his career total to 1,324 points, which moves him into 13
th in program history, Kickbush's career-high seven three-pointers gives him a career total of 205, which moves him into third place in program history for made three-pointers.
The Knights led the Dutch in field goal percentage (52% - 43.5%), three-point percentage (46.2 – 40%), assists (17-13) and steals (8-0). Additionally, Wartburg won the turnover battle by only committing six turnovers to Central's 16.
The Knights improved to 47-4 all-time in games where they surpassed the 100 point mark.
The Orange and Black will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 5 when they host Luther College with tip off at 8 p.m.
