Kickbush, Knights Set Single-Game Records in 103-81 Victory Over Buena Vista

WAVERLY, Iowa – Senior guard Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) scored a career-high 33 points and broke the singe-game record for most three-pointers in an individual game (9) as the Wartburg College Knights (16-8 overall, 10-5 A-R-C) defeated the Buena Vista University Beavers (11-14, 5-11) 103-81 on Wednesday night.


 
Kickbush's 33 points and seven rebounds led the team, while senior guard Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) added in 20 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Freshman guard Spencer Touro (Newhall) pitched in 14 points and a career-high six rebounds, while sophomore guard Max Smith Drahos (Cedar Rapids) contributed with 13 points on five of seven shooting (71.4%). As a team, Wartburg connected on 18 three-pointers, breaking the individual-game record for the most made three-pointers program history.
 
For the Beavers, Connor Winkleman led the team in scoring with 20 points, while Tim Jeffries added in 15 points. Garret Sittner and Brendan Gary each scored 10 points.
 
Kickbush got the game started for Wartburg with a three-pointer on the first possession of the game to take the early 3-0 lead. Both teams exchanged baskets to keep the game within four points over the course of the next five minutes before another three-pointer by Kickbush put the Knights up six, 24-18, with 14:43 left in the first half. Wartburg wouldn't allow the Beavers to get within four points the rest of the game, as an ensuing 28-12 run over the next seven minutes put the Knights up 52-30 with 7:31 to go in the half.
 
The Knights continued their display of offensive efficiency over the rest of the first half, as they led by as much as 32 points, 69-37, with 1:56 left in the half. Buena Vista connected on three free throws to close out the half trailing 28, 69-41. At the break, the Knights had connected on 22-30 field goals (73.3%). Wartburg's 14 first half three-pointers led the charge in the offensive-heavy first half.
 
The second half lead gave Wartburg an opportunity to allocate minutes throughout the bench. Junior center Jacob Kuhlemeier (Rockwell) scored a career-high four points in four minutes of action, while freshman Davis Roquet (Middleton, Wis.) was able to see his first minutes on the floor this season, finishing with one rebound in two minutes of play. The squad helped close out the game, with Wartburg exceeding the century mark for the second time this season in the 103-81 victory.
 
The Orange and Black led Buena Vista in all shooting statistical categories, rebounds (40-37), assists (22-13) and steals (6-5). Wartburg closed out the regular season by finishing 9-3 at home, including 6-2 against the American Rivers Conference.
 
Wartburg will conclude its regular season on the road against the University of Dubuque (13-11, 6-9) on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 4 p.m. The American Rivers Conference tournament will follow with the first games coming on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
