Brandon Lindholm

DECORAH, Iowa –  Five Knights scored in double-digits as Wartburg (15-7 overall, 9-7 A-R-C) defeated Luther (7-14, 1-12) 87-79 on Wednesday evening.

Junior guard Camry Moore (Waverly) scored a career-high 17 points, while freshman forward Aidan Weber (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded his first double-double with a career-high 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) led all scorers with 21 points, shooting 50% (6-12) from the field.  Sophomore guard Max Smith Drahos (Cedar Rapids) added in 16 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) rounded out those in double-digits with 10 points.

Wartburg jumped out to a quick 17-3 run in the first seven minutes of the contest to set the offensive tempo. Continuing the offensive assault, the Knights propelled themselves out to a 25-point lead (40-15), their largest of the game, with 4:43 left in the half. An ensuing 12-6 run would trim the Knights' lead to 19 points (46-27) heading into the half. Smith Drahos scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half, while Moore also finished with 11 in the frame.

The Norse came out strong from the gate in the second half, as they used a 13-2 run to trail by eight (48-40) with 17:21 left in the game. The Knights regained a double-digit lead nearly a minute later off of a jumper from Weber. Wartburg maintained a double-digit lead for most of the next 10 minutes, before Luther cut Wartburg's lead to eight (71-63) with 5:47 left in regulation.

A free throw by Garrian Wade and a three-pointer by Kappus cut the lead to four points (71-67) with 4:30 left to play. Wartburg maintained a lead of at least six points for the next four minutes before Moore helped seal the game by connecting on four of his eight total free throws over the game's final minute to lead the Knights to an 87-79 victory.

The Knights held the advantage in field goal percentage (47.5% - 35.6%), three-point percentage (52.2% - 28.9%) and rebounds (45-42).

After connecting on seven free throws tonight, Sabus has moved into second in program history for career made free throws with 453, surpassing current assistant coach and former Wartburg player Jason Steege.

The Orange and Black will return to action on Saturday when it hosts No. 1 Nebraska Wesleyan at 4 p.m. The annual Parent's Day and Senior Day presentations will occur at halftime of the women's game.
