WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 11/15 Wartburg women's basketball team (25-3 overall) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Basketball tournament with a 91-63 win over Bethany Lutheran Friday night. The Knights will host No. 9/10 Hope Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Sophomore Tori Hazard (Janesville) led the team with 12 points. Junior Katie Lindeman (Grundy Center) followed with 11, while sophomore Payton Draper (Waverly) and junior Amanda Brainerd (DeWitt) each tallied 10.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Volesky (Mount Vernon) had a team-high seven rebounds.
The Orange and Black won the opening tipoff and Hazard connected on a pass from junior Emma Gerdes (Cedar Falls) and they would lead for the rest of the game. Wartburg led 21-13 at the end of the first quarter, and 46-26 at the end of the first half.
The Knights continued to lead by 20 at the end of the third quarter, 70-50 and led by as many as 33 twice late in the fourth quarter.
The Orange and Black held two of the three team shooting percentage categories rebounds (47-29), and assists (21-16). Wartburg had 11 turnovers in the first half, but only surrendered one in the second half.
The Knights return to the court tomorrow.
