Illg's Walkoff Helps Knights Sweep Spartans

WAVERLY, Iowa-- Freshman Sydney Illg (Grimes) hit a walkoff single to left to give Wartburg the 9-8 win in game two of the doubleheader against Aurora Wednesday. The Knights had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Illg hit the ball to deep left centerfield which drove in two for the extra inning victory.

The first game was scoreless until the fifth inning when senior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) drove in sophomore Leah Campos (Diamond, Ill.) from second on her double to center, for the only run of the game.

Roby-Miklus went 2-3. Senior Brenna Gray (Waterloo) earned the win and sophomore Lauren Reicks (Cresco) extended her margin as the career saves leader.

A different story occurred in the finale as the Orange and Black took the early 3-0 lead in the first on a three-run home run by freshman Olivia Brecht (Center Point). The Spartans tied the game in the third. Aurora took the 5-3 lead in the fourth before Wartburg answered with another three-run inning in the fifth.

The Spartans tied the score again in the sixth and added a run in the seventh which made it 7-6. Campos drove in pinch runner freshman Haley Barkau (Denver) on her double to knot it at seven all in the bottom of the seventh. The next batter unfortunately struck out to send the game to extra innings.

In the eighth, Aurora tallied one run on an RBI single just past second base to regain the 8-7 lead. A double from sophomore Megan Ritter (Newton) and consecutive walks loaded the bases for Illg's at-bat.

Roby-Miklus was 2-2 with three runs scored and senior Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) and Ritter were both 2-3.

The Knights take to the road this weekend when they travel to face Buena Vista Saturday at 1 p.m.
