DECORAH, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (21-9 overall, 6-4 A-R-C) split the doubleheader with No. 17 Luther Saturday. The Knights were edged 2-1 in the opener, but won the finale, 5-2. The second game win snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Norse in the series, and third win over a ranked opponent for the Orange and Black this season.
The first game was scoreless until the seventh inning, when sophomore Leah Campos (Diamond, Ill.) drove in pinch runner sophomore Madison Stoaks (Clive) on her triple to right field to make it 1-0. The Norse answered with a leadoff home run to tie the game at one all. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Luther won on a walkoff bases loaded walk.
Roby-Miklus' string of consecutive games of reaching base safely was unfortunately halted.
In the second game, the Orange and Black took the early 1-0 lead as senior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) scored on freshman Sydney Illg's (Grimes) single to center. Illg gave Wartburg the 3-0 lead with her two-run home run. Campos earned another two RBIs in the seventh as she plated Illg and pinch runner freshman Haley Barkau (Denver) to make it 5-0.
The Norse scored their only runs of the game in the bottom of the frame on a two-run single to right.
Illg was 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Campos and senior Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) each went 2-4 and sophomore Maddie Rog (Norridge, Ill.) earned the complete game win.
The Knights return to the diamond next Saturday at Simpson at 1 p.m.
