INDIANOLA, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (22-10 overall, 7-5 A-R-C) split the doubleheader with Simpson Saturday. The Storm claimed the opener, 9-5, but the Knights won the finale, 8-1.
Simpson jumped to a 4-0 lead in its first trip to the plate. In the third, freshman Jenna Levine (DeKalb, Ill.) drove in senior Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) from second and the next batter, freshman Olivia Brecht (Center Point), drove in two on her double to make it a one-run game.
The Storm would score a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take the 7-3 lead. Simpson hit a two-run homer in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-3. In the seventh, senior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny) scored on a fielding error and O'Brien crossed the plate on a groundout for the final two runs of the game.
Sophmore Leah Campos (Diamond, Ill.) was 2-3 at the plate.
In the finale, the Storm scored their lone run in the second an a solo home run. The Orange and Black used an eight-run sixth inning which included a grand slam from senior Hannah Onken (Greene). That is the third grand slam this season for Wartburg, which sets a new single season record.
Sophomore Maddie Rog (Norridge, Ill.) threw another complete game to earn the win in the circle.Â
Freshman Sydney Illg (Grimes) was 3-4. Campos was 2-3 and Brecht was 2-4.
Wartburg returns to the field Wednesday when it hosts Nebraska Wesleyan at 3 p.m.
