Knights Sweep Duhawks

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (26-10 overall, 11-5 A-R-C) swept Loras 5-4 and 7-6 in eight innings Sunday. The Knights have earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament next weekend and will play No. 6 seed Simpson Friday, May 3 at 4:30 p.m.

In the first game, the Orange and Black took the early 1-0 lead in their first at-bats on a sacrifice fly from freshman Jenna Levine (DeKalb, Ill.). The Duhawks used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead, until Wartburg scored two in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Levine and RBI single from freshman Olivia Brecht (Center Point) to make it a one-run game at 4-3.

Sophomore Leah Campos (Diamond, Ill.) had a two-run home run in the sixth to help the Knights reclaim the lead at 5-4.

Brecht was 2-3 at the plate. Sophomore Lauren Reicks (Cresco) earned the win in the circle and classmate Maddie Rog (Norridge, Ill.) earned the save.

The second game was scoreless until the third when Loras plated three, included a two-run double to take the early lead. Levine responded in the bottom of the inning as she drove in sophomore Madison Stoaks (Clive) and classmate Megan Ritter (Newton) on her double to left to make it 3-2.

The Duhawks added one in the fifth and two in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-2.

The Knights used a four-run seventh inning and tied it at six all on a two-run triple to right by Illg. The next batter struck out to send it into extra innings.

Loras was retired in order in its eighth.

For the Orange and Black, Brecht hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a Duhawk fielding error and scored the game-winning run on another fielding error to seal the sweep.

Illg was 3-4 and finished a home run shy of the cycle. Rog recorded a career-high six strikeouts.

Wartburg returns to the field Tuesday when they travel to face St. Kate's in a twinbill at 3:30 p.m.
