WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg baseball team (11-23 overall, 8-13 A-R-C) completed the series sweep over Simpson (12-21, 4-17) Monday as it claimed both games of the twinbill 6-5 and 4-2. This also marked the 15th straight win over the Storm in the all-time series, which dates back to the 2015 season.
In the first game of the day, Simpson took the 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single to right field. The Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, which included an RBI double from junior Tyler Hovick (Roland).
The Storm added a run in the second and fourth innings to take the 3-2 lead. The Orange and Black responded with two sac flys in the fifth for the go-ahead runs at 4-3.
Simpson answered once more with two runs in the seventh on an RBI single and groundout to make it 5-4.
In the eighth, sophomore Parker Ridge (Marion) scored from first on junior Tyler Nunemaker's (Ely) double to right center to knot it at five all. Nunemaker later scored the game-winning run on pinch hitter sophomore Brett Kelting's (Wheatland) single to left to take the 6-4 lead.
Hovick led the team at the plate as he went 2-3 and tied his career high with two doubles.
In the series finale, Wartburg took the 1-0 lead in the second as Kelting scored on a Storm error. The Knights added to their margin in the fifth as Hovick plated Ridge on his single to right. The Storm tied it in the sixth on a two-run single.
A sac fly from freshman Max Goodhue (Carlisle) scored Nunemaker for the go-ahead run at 3-2 in the bottom of the frame. The Orange and Black scored their final run in the eighth on an attempted suicide squeeze, which Nunemaker crossed the plate for his second run of the game.
Kelting and Nunemaker each went 3-4. Sophomore Darren Kilpatrick (Fairfax) threw 7.2 innings and struck out six, just one shy of his career mark.
Freshman Aaron Eybers (Sioux City) earned the save in both games.
Wartburg returns to the field Friday on the road at Loras with first pitch at 6 p.m.
