Knights Sweep Spartans

DUBUQUE, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (19-7 overall, 4-2 American Rivers) swept Dubuque 7-3 and 2-0 Saturday. The Knights have now won the last eight-straight in the series.

In the opener, the Orange and Black took the early 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single up the middle by freshman Olivia Brecht (Center Point). The Spartans evened the score in the bottom of the frame on consecutive bases loaded walks.

In the second, freshman Sydney Illg (Grimes) drove in the go-ahead runs on her two-run single. Dubuque sliced the margin to one as it scored on an error in the third. Wartburg tallied two in the fifth on back-to-back RBI groundouts, and Illg recorded her third RBI of the game on her sac fly to center in the sixth which drove in senior Liz Roby-Miklus (Ankeny).

Senior Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) went 3-3 and scored two runs. Illg was 1-3 with a career-high three RBIs. Sophomore Lauren Reicks (Cresco) earned the win in relief.

The second game remained scoreless until the sixth when Roby-Miklus hit a leadoff triple to center field, and later scored on a sac fly from freshman Jenna Levine (DeKalb, Ill.). O'Brien crossed the plate on a passed ball for the second run of the inning.

Sophomore Maddie Rog (Norridge, Ill.) surrendered only four hits as she threw her third complete game of the season.

Sophomore Madison Stoaks (Clive) and classmate Megan Ritter (Newton) each went 2-3 in the contest.

The Knights return home Wednesday when they host Central at 3 p.m.
