CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The No. 7-ranked Wartburg women's basketball team had a road victory, beating Coe 68-50.
After falling behind 7-3 to Coe at the start of the game, a steal by senior
Amanda Brainerd and a good layup by junior Katelyn Volesky at the 6:51 minute mark brought the game within two points.
Less than a minute later, another layup by Volesky tied the game before a three by junior
Payton Draper gave Wartburg its first lead.
Heading into the locker room, Wartburg held a nine point lead over the Kohawks, after senior
Emma Gerdes made a layup with four seconds remaining.
The Knights took a 21 point lead over Coe when freshman
Macy Harris connected a three pointer. The Orange and Black only allowed Coe to score in the single digits during the third.
The Kohawks came back and outscored Wartburg in the fourth, but were unable to take a win.Â
Junior
Tori Hazard led the Knights with 14 points, followed by Gerdes who scored 13 while Brainerd and Volesky each notched 11 points. Five other Knights scored with 19 points coming from the bench.Â
Wartburg was 24-of-64 in field goal shooting and 12-15 at the free throw line. The Knights had a total of 40 rebounds, 10 steals and three blocks.
Next up, Wartburg is on the road to play conference opponent Simpson on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Game start is 5:30 p.m.
