Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Amsberry Earns 400th Win, Gerdes Reaches 1,000 Career Points

WAVERLY - The No. 9-ranked Wartburg women's basketball team defeated Buena Vista University 95-59 Wednesday evening during its "Play4Kay" cancer awareness game at Levick Arena.

With the win, Bob Amsberry totaled his 400th as a head coach. He compiled 131 victories at Rockford College from 1997-2006 and has now reached career 400 wins in his 14th season at the helm of the Wartburg program.

In addition, senior Emma Gerdes became the 17th player in Wartburg women's basketball program history to join the 1,000 point club.

"That makes it even more special," Amsberry commented on reaching the milestones on the same game as Gerdes. "When I found out that we were both close, I thought it would be really cool if it happened on the same night. Emma and I have shared a lot together, she was also with us for my 300th win during her freshman year. I don't think that happens very often."

The Knights shot nearly 50 percent from the field while forcing 21 Beaver turnovers. The home team also saw solid contribution from the bench, contributing 57 points - led by a game-high 14 points from Alecia Kimball, who was perfect from the field (4-for-4) along with a 3-for-3 mark from beyond the arc.

Bailey Naig led the Orange & Black with seven rebounds while Ally Conrad led with five assists and three steals. Outside of Kimball, Tori Hazard and Macy Harris also scored in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Gerdes, a native of Cedar Falls, needed just four points on the night to reach the 1,000-point plateau, and did just that right on the mark while adding four rebounds and two steals.

"I told the team that I remember my first win, but I don't remember 100, 200, or 300," said Amsberry. "However, I'll always remember this one because this team is really special"
