Knights Q & A: Katie Choate

Cedar Rapids native Katie Choate has been a varsity golfer for three years, earning All-Conference honors this fall after a sixth-place finish at the American Rivers Conference meet. As a biochemistry major, Choate also boasts All-American Scholar honors from the Women's Golf Coaches Association. Choate plans to attend either a medical or graduate program after her graduation in 2021.

How did you hear about Wartburg?

KC:  I heard about Wartburg through my high school, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, and I received letters in the mail.

What convinced you that Wartburg would be the right fit?

KC: My visit to Wartburg definitely was my convincing factor along with their science programs. I really liked how the campus felt like home.

What has been your favorite Wartburg athletic memory?

KC: My favorite athletic memory was when we went to play at the Jewel my sophomore year. We all had bug bites everywhere going into the second day, but we managed to all shoot 80 and under to move up four team spots.

How do you balance being a student-athlete?

KC: Being a student-athlete definitely takes up a lot of time, but I try to balance it by getting my homework done between class and practice and planning out times when I have to study well in advance. Coaches are pretty flexible if you have a conflict with classes and will help work around it.

How has playing golf added to your Wartburg experience?

KC: Playing a sport has added to my Wartburg experience because it has allowed me to meet so many people from various schools. Now, usually when we play I at least know one of the girls in my group or get to know them for future meets.

Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?

SP: The only superstition I have is that I can't wear a sweatshirt when I play, which really sucks when it is cold out.

What advice do you have for high school students considering golfing at Wartburg?

KC: The one piece of advice I would give to incoming freshmen who want to golf is that it is a big adjustment from high school. Don't expect perfect results right away, it will take time to get used to the distance changes. It is a lot of fun and don't stress!

What does it mean to be a Knight?

KC: Being a Knight means proudly wearing the orange and black when competing in any competition, attending class, and participating in extracurricular activities.
