Women's Soccer Earn 1-0 Win to Wrap Up Regular Season

DECORAH, Iowa -Wartburg women's soccer earned a 1-0 win over Luther College on Tuesday, Oct. 26 to finish the regular season 14-2-1 overall and 7-1 in American Rivers Conference play.

The Orange & Black got on the board early after drawing a penalty that led to a successful penalty kick from Lauren Kirkle in the fifth minute of play. The goal marks Kirkle's fourth goal of the season and her second converted penalty kick.

The rest of the first half was an even battle with good defensive play on both sides. Both schools recorded four shots in the first, but none found the net. The Knights would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The score remained 1-0 throughout the second half.

The Norse had multiple scoring opportunities with under 10 minutes left in the match, but the Knights defense continued to play tough. Marissa Lopez recorded two saves with less then 10 minutes to go to secure the 1-0 shutout victory. Lopez played all 90 minutes in goal for the Orange & Black and recorded six saves.

Luther and Wartburg were tied on total shots at nine each, but the Norse led in shots on goal six to three. Wartburg dominated corner kicks with an eight to two advantage.

Offensively, the Knights were paced by Kirkle, who scored the lone goal of the match and led in shots on goal with two of Wartburg's three. Emily Fontana recorded the only other shot on goal in the contest for the Knights.
