ST. PAUL, Minn. – Wartburg women's soccer was defeated 1-0 by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 13 to close the 2021 season.
This marked the fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance for Wartburg and ninth overall. The Knights and Eagles took the pitch on a cold and windy day for a rematch from September 21
st.
In the first half, neither team able to pull away from the other. Wartburg held a slight edge in total shots three to two, but both teams were even in shots on goal with two. No shots were able to find the net as both goalies recorded two saves.
Snow started to fall in the second half and the Eagles came out of halftime firing, scoring the match's first goal just two minutes into the second half. The goal came from Sophie Amundson with an assist credited to Maggie Hernandez.
The Knights continued to fight hard throughout the second half but were unable to convert any scoring opportunities. UW-La Crosse finished the match with an advantage in shots seven to five and shots on goal six to three.
Offensively the Knights were led by
Katie Berglund, who finished the match with two shots and one on goal. In goal for the Orange & Black,
Marissa Lopez started and played all 90 minutes. Lopez recorded four saves to finish the season with 77.
Wartburg finishes the season with an overall record of 15-4-1 and a conference ledger of 7-1.
