Murphy's Career Night Leads No. 10 Wartburg Past UW-Stout

MENOMONIE Wis.—A career-high night for Jaedon Murphy helped to lead to No. 10 Wartburg Knights women's basketball to a 91-71 road win over University of Wisconsin-Stout.

In the sixth meeting in program history, the Knights held the Blue Devils of Wisconsin-Stout to 13 first quarter points.

Game Summary

In the opening minute and a half of the game, the Knights' Hannah Anderson and Taylor Runchey scored a trio of 3-pointers. Murphy and Britney Young added a pair of 3-pointers as the Knights made seven baskets from beyond the arc in the opening quarter. The Knights kept the offense on cruise control, making 11-of-21 field goal attempts, and taking a 20-point lead late.

Looking to stop the Knights offense, the Blue Devils opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run as the Knights struggled offensively. Murphy score a layup in the paint just ahead of the seven-minute mark, to extend the Knights lead to nine. The Knights kept the Blue Devils at bay, scoring 11 points in the final minutes.

Macy Harris connected with Young in the third quarter for a 3-point basket as the Knights took a 12-point lead over the Blue Devils. Murphy, who led the Knights with five offensive rebounds, capitalized on an offensive rebound seven minutes remaining. Harris would be a playmaker late, assisting Murphy with a 3-pointer before forcing a steal and a bucket less than 30 seconds later. A defensive battle, the teams would score a combined seven points in the final four minutes of the third quarter.

Murphy answered a pair of opening minute baskets from the Blue Devils in the fourth quarter, extending the Knights lead to 15. With the offense hot, a trio of Knights scored baskets within a minute, taking the lead to 77-58. Late in the quarter, Young was involved with three of four scoring plays as the Knights took their largest lead of the game (26) with 3:13 remaining. The Knights played strong defense in the closing minutes as four of the Blue Devils eight points came from the charity line.

Looking at the Numbers

Murphy led the Knights in scoring, making 14-of-18 field goal attempts, 4-of-5 3-pointers, and 4-of-5 free throws for a career-high 36 points. Murphy led the team with nine rebounds (5 offensive), recorded three blocks, and three assists.

Young, who was 3-of-7 from 3-point range, added 11 points and 8 rebounds in the contest. Sara Faber was 4-of-8 from the field, made one 3-pointer, and a free throw, was the last Knights player in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Overall, the Knights shot 49% from the field, 45% from beyond the arc (making 13 3-pointers) and went 10-of-15 from the free throw line (67%). The Knights captured more board than the Blue Devils by three, capturing 13 offensive and 27 defensive boards.

Next Time Out

The Knights return to Levick Arena as they are set to host University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20.
