No. 20 Knights Sweep WashU With Pair of Shutouts

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The No. 20-ranked Wartburg College softball team swept a doubleheader against Washington University-St. Louis on Saturday, March 13, taking down the Bears 9-0 and 10-0 on the campus of Illinois College.

Starting pitchers Maddie Rog and Ashley Nelson both pitched complete game shutouts while Sydney Illg tallied five hits and Kaci Sherwood recorded six runs batted in.

Rog pitched six scoreless innings to improve her record to 4-1 on the season, allowing just two hits for the Bears with four strikeouts.

Sherwood went 3-for-4 at the plate, including three RBI. Kaylie Springer also went 3-3 with two runs scored, and Illg and Jordan Swiatkowski each tallied two hits. 

After four scoreless innings, the Knights' offense broke out in the fifth inning for six runs off six hits. Sydney Fellows and Leah Campos each tallied two-run singles, and Sherwood notched a RBI bunt single.

Wartburg added another trio of runs the following inning, led by a two-run single from Sherwood and an RBI groundout from Campos.

Nelson, a freshman from DeKalb, Ill., pitched a complete game six-inning shutout in her first collegiate start to earn his first win as a Knight in the pitcher's circle. She allowed just one WashU base hit. Nelson also went 2-4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI.

The eventual game-winning run came during a three-run third inning for the Knights. With two outs, Illg single and stole second base. She then came around to score off a Lauren Frerichs single. Wartburg added another run off a Bear error and from a Nelson RBI double to score Campos.

The Knights scored four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Sherwood hit her fifth homer of the season in the fifth, a two-run bomb to give the Knights a 6-0 lead. 

Nelson sent down the Bears in order in the bottom of the sixth to seal the two-game shutout.

Wartburg, now 9-1 overall, opens American Rivers Conference action next weekend at home, hosting a three-game series versus the University of Dubuque at Lynes Field March 20-21.
