DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Wartburg College baseball team and the University of Dubuque went intro extra innings during both games of its American Rivers Conference opening doubleheader on Saturday, March 20 at Dan W. Runkle Field, with the Spartans prevailing 1-0 and 4-3.
Carter Stubitz,
Ben DeKruyf, and
Brett Kelting tallied three hits apiece through two games.
Dylan Gotto and
Darren Kilpatrick combined for 13 strikeouts in 15 innings pitched.
Dubuque 1, Wartburg 0 (10 inn.)
Gotto and Dubuque's Jordan Nelson put together a pitcher's dual, leaving the scorebook blank through nine innings. The pair also only allowed one base on balls each.
The Knights' ace
Dylan Gotto through eight scoreless innings, allowing five Spartan base hits with six strikeouts.
Dubuque limited Wartburg to five hits, with two coming from the Knights' catcher
Carter Stubitz.
After nine innings,
Aaron Eybers came in to relieve Gotto and struck out the leadoff batter to open the 10th inning. The Spartans walked off on an RBI single, however, opening the series with a 1-0 victory.
Dubuque 4, Wartburg 3 (11 inn.)
Game two brought more extra inning action, as Dubuque strung together a three-run seventh inning to knot the game at 3-3.
Wartburg scored a pair of the second off a
Brett Kelting RBI double and
Max Goodhue RBI single. Kelting batted in another in the fourth, scoring Stubitz to claim a three-run advantage.
Darren Kilpatrick started game two on the mound for the Knights and didn't allow a Spartan run through the first six innings. In the seventh, however, UD broke through, tying the game with a hit while the Wartburg defense surrendered three errors.
Joey Ciero relieved Kilpatrick for the Knights and pitched the final 3.1 innings. The home team walked off one again with a game-winning single in the 11th.
