Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Wartburg Collects Second Straight Shutout

WAVERLY, Iowa - Wartburg men's soccer remained undefeated at Salzwedel Field when it took down Luther College 3-0 on Wednesday, April 21 and earned its second straight shutout. Freshman Michael Dunn led the Knights with his first multi-goal game of his career.

The Orange & Black (5-2 A-R-C) will finish up their season on Saturday, April 24 when they welcome Nebraska Wesleyan University (2-4 A-R-C) to Salzwedel Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

The Knights controlled the run of play early and found themselves a goal in the 10th minute courtesy of Dunn. Sophomore Payton Chapman sent in a free kick from midfield and found Dunn near the back post and his toe poke wrapped into the left corner.

Wartburg doubled its lead just two minutes later when senior Jack Palen registered his team-best fifth goal of the season. Sophomore Caleb Halleran sent in a corner kick to the back post where Dunn collected the ball. Dunn then slotted a pass to the center of the box and Palen did the rest, putting the Knights up 2-0.

The rest of the first half was back-and-forth as Luther held a 5-3 advantage on shots while Wartburg went into the intermission with a two-goal advantage.

Wartburg added one final tally in the 59th minute when Dunn recorded his second of the evening. In an almost identical play from the first half, Chapman sent in a free kick from midfield that found Dunn in the box for a tap in.

The Knights withstood the final push from the Norse and took home their fifth victory of the season to move into third place in the American Rivers Conference. With two assists tonight, Chapman now has seven helpers on the year to lead the conference.

Luther held a 10-6 advantage on shots but the shots on goal tally favored Wartburg, 5-4. Sophomore goalkeeper Brennon Woody recorded his fourth win of the season behind four saves.
