WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College baseball team dropped a pair of American Rivers Conference games during its series-opening doubleheader versus rival Luther College Saturday afternoon from Harms Stadium at Hertel Field, falling by scores of 7-3 and 5-1.
Through two games, the Norse outhit the Knights 17-14 while the Luther defense was solid, turning a trio of double plays and stranding 16 Knights on base.
Wartburg's overall record moves to 12-16 on the year and 10-12 during A-R-C action while Luther improves to 19-7 within the league.

In the bottom half of the first inning, the Knights strung together three-straight hits all with two outs.
Parker Ridge and
Max Goodhue each reached base with singles prior to a
Zachary Walton two-run double off the left field fence to grant the home team a 2-0 lead.
Wartburg added another run in the third prior to Luther responding with a five-run fourth inning. The Norse scored five off three hits and a Wartburg error to claim a 5-3 lead.
The visitors added two more in the following inning as the Knights' defense struggled, committing another error that caused a run.
After the third inning, Luther starting pitcher Tyler Boesel found a groove, holding the Knights scoreless through the sixth inning en route to earning the win. Collin Chalmers came in to relive Boesel in the seventh and sent the Knights down in order.
Jacob Murray suffered the loss as his record moved to 3-3 on the year.
Wartburg tallied six hits compared to Luther's five, led by a pair of hits each from
Keaton Gray and
Max Goodhue.

The Norse held the Orange & Black scoreless through eight innings, limiting Wartburg to eight hits compared to their total of 12.
A two-run first inning for the visitors stood as the eventual difference, as Luke Plunkett homered to open the game and was followed by a trio of single for the eventual game-winning RBI.
Luther's John Colucci III was steady on the mound, going 7.1 innings before the Knights got to him in the eighth. Gray led off the inning with his third hit of the day and came around to score the Knights' sole run of the game on a Goodhue double to right center.
Calvin Brenda relieved Coluci III and allowed just one hit in the final 1.2 innings to seal the Saturday sweep for the Norse.
Darren Kilpatrick pitched seven innings on the mound for Wartburg, allowing five earned runs off nine hits. He received the loss as his record moved to 3-3 on the season.
