No. 16 Knights Records Season-High 17 Runs Over Luther

DECORAH, Iowa - The No. 16 Wartburg softball team concluded its three-game series against rival Luther College on Saturday, April 24 at Betty A. Hoff Field and came away with a 17-4 victory in five innings, which notched a new season high for most runs.

The Knights (22-6, 13-5 A-R-C) will continue conference play on Saturday, May 1 when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa for a weekend series against Loras College (1-19, 1-15 A-R-C) with game one beginning at 1 p.m.

The Orange & Black never trailed against the Norse as they began the scoring in the top of the first when senior Leah Campos singled to right field and brought in junior Sydney Illg. However, Luther managed to tie the game heading into the second before sophomore Lauren Frerichs hit a two RBI double to left field.

Wartburg did not look back after taking the 3-1 lead and added seven runs to its total in the third. Madison Stoaks, Kaci Sherwood, Hannah Happ, Frerichs and Illg all record RBIs in the frame. After falling into a 10-1 deficit, Luther knocked in a score to make it an eight-run game.

The bats for the Knights continued to stay red hot in the fourth when Frerichs brought in a pair of runs and finished the contest with a career-high five RBIs. Freshman Tarah Wehde capped off the game for Wartburg when she hit a two-shot homerun to give the Knights a 17-4 victory.

Freshman Ashley Nelson started on the mound for the Knights and pitched four innings with an ERA of two, which moved her season record to 8-1. Senior Maddie Rog relieved the freshman and allowed zero hits in the fifth. Wehde led the Orange & Black with a career-best three hits and four runs scored.
