EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The #14 ranked women's soccer team moved to 5-0-1 after they defeated the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugold's on the road Wednesday, Sept. 15.
The Knights got on the scoreboard quick as
Joy Smith scored first, off an assist from
Kate Luers in the eighth minute to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
The Orange & Black kept the attack going and scored again in the 12
th minute of play when
Annie Place found
Gabby Corday with a nice assist to make it a 2-0 contest.
The Blugolds struck back with a goal of their own in the 21
st minute when Megan Hansen scored off a pass from Maddie Ames. This cut the Knights lead to 2-1.
Smith scored for the second time in this match in the 35
th minute to give the Knights a 3-1 lead off another unassisted goal. Wartburg took the 3-1 lead into the half.
It wouldn't take long before Smith would complete the hat-trick as she scored her third goal in the 51
st minute, this time coming from an assist by
Sarah Campbell. The hat-trick marked a career-high day for Smith in scoring as she surpassed multiple two-goal games from seasons prior as well as pushed her current season total in goals to six.
The Knights were outshot by the Blugolds 11-7 but led shots on goal 6-5.
Marissa Lopez played 75 minutes in goal and recorded four saves for the Knights in the victory.

The Knights are back in action Saturday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. when they take on Augsburg University at Salzwedel field.
