Women's Soccer Set for Tests on the Road and Home

Waverly, Iowa - Wartburg women's soccer will look to remain undefeated after a 1-0 start during a pair of matches this week against the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday, Sept. 4 set for 1 p.m. and against St. Olaf College on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 4 - 1:00 p.m. - St. Paul, MN - CSB Soccer Field
Wartburg Knights (1-0 ) at Saint Benedict Bennies (1-0)

Tuesday, Sept. 7 - 5:00 p.m. - Waverly, Iowa - Salzwedel Field

Last Time Out
The Knights opened their season Wednesday, Sept. 1 with a win against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. After a strong offensive attack from Wartburg in both the first and second half the score remained 0-0. The Knights out shot the Pointers 18-4 and had a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks in regulation. After an even first overtime, the Orange & Black continued to attack in the second overtime resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for Lauren Kirkle in the 106th minute. Kirkle fired the shot past the keeper for the game-winning goal giving the Knights the first goal and win of the 2021 season.

College of Saint Benedict
The Knights will travel Saturday to Saint Benedict College for a non-conference matchup and their first road match of the year. The Bennies opened their season with a decisive 10-0 road victory Wednesday, Sept. 1 against the University of Minnesota Morris. Saint Benedict came out firing offensively, scoring 6 goals in the first 27 minutes of play. Senior Roxy Veldman led the Bennies in the win netting a hat trick. The last time the Knights faced the Bennies was in the 2019 season where the Orange & Black came away with a 4-1 win at Salzwedel Field. 

St. Olaf College
After Saturday's road test, Wartburg will be back at Salzwedel Field for another non-conference bout against St. Olaf College. The Lions opened their season on the road against Coe College which resulted in a 1-1 tie after full time an two overtimes. The Kohawks took an early 1-0 lead after a penalty kick goal in the first two minutes of play, but the Lions answered when Faith Yi scored in her collegiate debut. There were two saves recorded by the Lions keeper and both came in the first overtime period. The last contest between Wartburg an St. Olaf took place at Salzwedel Field during the 2017 season where the Orange & Black came away with a 3-0 shutout.
