WAVERLY, Iowa – Wartburg women's soccer was back in action at Salzwedel field as they defeated St. Olaf College 2-1 in full-time.
Coming off a strong offensive performance in last Saturday's match, the Knights didn't take long to strike first in this match.
Sarah Campbell scored the matches first goal from a beautiful corner kick in the 15
th minute that tipped off an out-stretched goalkeeper hand and in to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. The goal is Campbell's second in the 2021 season.
The Orange & Black were relentless in the first half offensively with an advantage in both shots and corner kicks 9-3 and 5-2 respectively.
The trend continued in the second half with Wartburg spending a lot of time in attacking territory but wouldn't convert any opportunities into goals until the 79
th minute when
Joy Smith scored her second goal of the season. The goal was assisted by
Annie Place who made a great pass to set Smith up.
Both Campbell and Smith have scored a goal in back-to-back matches now for the Orange & Black.
St. Olaf would make a late charge in the last 10 minutes of regulation with an aggressive attack that resulted in one goal in the 88
th minute to make it 2-1. The Knights fended off the late Oles charge to hold on to the 2-1 victory.
The match finished with decisive edge in shots for Wartburg at 21-9 and a 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Knights also attempted 11 corner kicks to the Oles' 3.
In goal for the Knights,
Marissa Lopez played all 90 minutes and recorded four saves. Offensively, it was Campbell with six shots (four on goal) and Smith with five shots (two on goal) that led Wartburg to victory.
Next time out on the pitch
The Knights will travel to La Crosse, Wis. to take on Illinois Wesleyan University Saturday, Sept. 11 at 3:00 p.m.
