STORM LAKE, Iowa—Scoring a season-high 98 points, the No. 19/25 Wartburg Knights women's basketball squad posted a 98-44 win on the road at the Buena Vista University Beavers.
The Knights made a season-high 21 free throws out of 29 free throw attempts for 73 percent. The Knights went 32-of-54 (59 percent) from the field, and 13-of-25 from the three-point arc (52 percent).
Game Summary
Jaedon Murphy hit the first basket of the day for the Orange & Black at the 7:34 mark in the first quarter, opening a 10-0 run. The Knights defense held the Beavers in a five-minute scoring drought as
Macy Harris extended the Knights lead to ten. After trading quick baskets with the Beavers,
Zoey Long caught the ball from Harris for a three-pointer. A hot early first quarter was quiet as the Knights scored six minutes in the final three minutes of the first quarter. Shooting 69 percent from the field in the second quarter, the Knights outscored the Beavers 25-5.
Britney Young hit the opening basket of the third quarter for the Knights as
Taylor Runchey and Murphy made three consecutive trips to the free throw line (5-of-6). A steady flow of baskets saw the Knights make 10-of-17 field goals, including three three-pointers. Long and
Tatum Grubbs scored the final seven points of the quarter for the Orange & Black, taking an 80-34 lead with one quarter to go.
The opening points for both squads in the final quarter came from the free throw line. The Beavers made back-to-back trips to the free throw line as
Maggie Wilkins scored the next four points for the Knights.
Lauren Woeste scored all six of her points from the free throw line (6-of-10) before
Cora Saunders hit the final three-pointer of the night.
With the win, the Knights improve to 18-4 overall, 11-3 A-R-C. The Beavers fall to 7-14 overall and 5-10 A-R-C.
Checking out the Numbers
Four Knights landed in double-digit scoring, as
Sara Faber led the Knights with 12 points (4-of-7 FG, 2-of-3 three-pointers). Murphy added 11 points on (3-of-7 FG and 3-of-4 FT), while Wilkins and Long added 10 points each. Thirteen Knights landed in the scoring column as three Knights were perfect from the free throw line.
Murphy led the Knights in rebounding with 5 boards as Faber was credited with five assists. The Knights were credited with 34 rebounds, 19 assists, and 12 steals in the contest. The Knights collected 38 points off turnovers as the bench added 59 points in the game.
