Knights Baseball Defeated by Gustavus Adolphus

SAINT PETER, Minn. – Wartburg baseball fell to Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday, Mar. 13 in both games of today's doubleheader to move to 5-5 overall this season.
 
Game 1: Gustavus Adolphus 13, Wartburg 4
The Gusties scored two runs in the bottom of the first after a double and a fielder's choice each brought a run in. The Knights were able to answer in the third inning with an RBI from Eliot Jurgensen, Max Goodhue and Zach Wesolowski. Three of the Knights four hits came in the third inning and Goodhue's triple marked his second of the season.
 
Gustavus retook the lead 5-3 after a leadoff homerun sparked a three-run bottom of the third and added another two with a homer in the fourth. The Knights were able to add one more run and it came in the sixth inning after a sacrifice fly from Zach Walton that made the score 4-8. The Gusties closed the game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to closeout a 13-4 win.
 
Game Leaders
Caleb Andrews, Jurgensen and Goodhue all had extra base hits for the Knights today, with two doubles and one triple. The Knights offense was spread out today with one RBI each from Jurgensen, Goodhue, Wesolowski and Walton.
 
Dylan Gotto started on the mound for the Orange & Black and pitched five innings. The senior gave allowed 11 hits and recorded four strikeouts in the start. Ben DeKruyf, Malcolm Newell and Aaron Eybers all saw time on the mound to close the game.
 
Game 2: Gustavus Adolphus 8, Wartburg 3
The Knights jumped on the Gusties early in game two with two runs in the top of the first after Gustavus walked in the first run and Andrews brought in another run with a sacrifice flyout. Gustavus got one run back in the bottom of the first after a double scored one.
 
Gustavus scored four more unanswered runs over the next two innings to break the game open to 6-2. Goodhue hit an RBI double in the top of the fourth to make the score 6-3, but the Knights left three baserunners on to end the fourth.
 
The Gusties added two runs of insurance in both the sixth and seventh innings to push the lead to 11-3 with two innings left to play. The Knights rallied in the eighth inning with three runs after RBI singles from Goodhue and Jurgensen made the score 11-6 heading into the final frame. The Knights could not add any runs in the ninth and fell 11-6 to Gustavus.
 
Game Leaders
Goodhue went three for five from the plate in game two and batted in a team-high two RBI. The senior had another extra base hit today with an RBI double in game two and scored a run.
 
Jurgensen was also three for five at the plate as well in game two. The centerfielder recorded one RBI and scored two runs to help pace the Knights offensively
 
Darren Kilpatrick started on the mound for the Knights and pitched five innings in the outing. The senior struck out six batters in the start, but the loss brings his record to 1-2 this season.
 
Will Armstrong pitched the last three innings in relief of Kilpatrick and recorded two strikeouts.
 
Next Time Out
Wartburg is in action next on Tuesday, Mar. 15 where they will host Saint Mary's University (Minn.) in a doubleheader in Waverly, Iowa beginning at 1 p.m.
