ELIZABETHTOWN, KY—The Wartburg Knights Softball squad swept the second day of the Pioneer Classic, posting a 9-1 win over Anderson University and a 6-2 win over Muskingum University.
Anderson Recap
Sydney Illg grounded out to third base on a sacrifice RBI as
Hannah Happ scored the opening run for the Knights.
Lauren Frerichs homered at the next at bat as the Knights took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
Anderson landed on the scoreboard as Taylor Johns hit an RBI double in the third. Frerichs bunted in the bottom of the third to reach base before stealing second and third.
Ella Link hit an RBI double as Frerichs crossed the plate for the second time in the game.
Jenna Levine reached base on an error by the left fielder as Link and
Tarah Wehde scored for the Knights.
A pair of bunts by the Knights in the bottom of the fourth saw
Kaylie Springer and
Sydney Fellows add to the Knights lead. Frerichs recorded a base hit and advanced on the throw for a 2 RBI as Illg and Happ scored the final runs for the Orange & Black.
Carly Salutric recorded her second complete game of the season, allowing one run on five hits.
Muskingum Recap
The Knights recorded two hits in the opening innings of game two, as the Knights defense allowed one run on three hits in the bottom of the first.
Springer tied the game up at one in the third on an RBI sac fly from Illg in the third. The game remained tied at one until the bottom of the fifth. Muskingum's Sarah Piteo hit an RBI double as Muskingum jumped back up by one.
After back-to-back singles by the Knights in the seventh, Illg hit an RBI double as Springer tied the game up for the Knights. Illg crossed the plate to regain the lead for the Knights, as Levine hit a single RBI bunt. Jenna Swiatkowski hit a 3 RBI triple as Fellows, Levine, and Link scored for the Knights. The Knights defense allowed no hits and no runs in the bottom of the seventh for their third consecutive win.
On the pitcher's mound,
Ashley Nelson allowed two runs off seven hits and five strikeouts. Nelson faced 30 batters and recorded one walk.

The Knights open their season at home on March 25, hosting Webster University for a doubleheader.
