WAVERLY, Iowa – Knights baseball closed the three-game series with Coe College with an 8-3 loss at home on Monday, Mar. 28. Wartburg is now 11-9 overall and 1-2 in American Rivers Conference play.
 
 
Game Summary
Both teams started the game with scoreless first innings and 
Joey Ciero struck out the side to start the game for the Orange & Black. Coe got on the scoreboard after an error and balk brought in two runs in the second inning.
 
The Kohawks scored another run in the third inning to make the score 3-0, but the Knights got one run back in the bottom half of the third. 
Max Goodhue singled to advance 
Eliot Jurgensen to second and then 
Zach Wesolowski singled to right field to bring in the run to make it 3-1.
 
The Knights had bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth after three straight walks but were not able to bring any runs across. After multiple innings with just one hit, Coe added a run in the seventh inning with a homerun to make the score 4-1. The Kohawks followed it up with a four run eighth inning after a two RBI single and an error made the score 8-1.
 
Wartburg was down to its last out when Jurgensen walked and then Goodhue hit a deep homer to left-center field to bring the score to 8-3. Coe closed the game to win 8-3 and take the series two games to one.
 
Ciero started the game and pitched six innings for the Knights in the loss. The junior right hander recorded four strikeouts and allowed five hits in his outing. 
Aaron Eybers pitched two innings and 
Max Hansen pitched one inning closed the game in relief of Ciero on the mound.
 
Goodhue led the Orange & Black at the plate with a 4/5 hitting performance and a team-high two RBI. His homerun in the ninth inning was his first of the season and he is second on the team in hits with 24.
 
Both Jurgensen and 
Caleb Andrews recorded two hits in the contest. Jurgensen drew two walks and finished 2/3.
 
Next Time Out
The Knights continue A-R-C play tomorrow, Mar. 29 with a doubleheader on the road against Luther College beginning at 1 p.m.
