CLERMONT, Fla.—Sweeping their last four games, the Wartburg Knights softball team moves to 10-2 on the season after a successful trip to the Spring Games.
The Knights posted wins over Calvin, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Husson, and Geneva on March 4 and 5.
Calvin Recap (Wartburg 3, Calvin 0)
After reaching on a walk,
Lauren Frerichs rounded the bases for the Orange & Black for the first run of the day in the second inning on
Sydney Illg's RBI double. Illg made her way around the bases on
Hannah Happ's RBI single as Happ scored the third run for the Knights.
RPI Recap (Wartburg 9, RPI 2)
Ella Link hit an RBI single in the first inning as
Sydney Fellows put the Knights up by one early. Fellows added the second run for Knights in the third, scoring on
Olivia Brecht's groundout. Illg hit a home run in the fourth as the Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
RPI got on the board in the fourth. RPI added a second run in the fifth, trimming the Knights lead to one at 3-2.
Fellows continued to be involved on the offense, adding an RBI to her stat sheet as
Kaylie Springer scored.
Reegan Deputy and
Riley Feeley added runs for the Orange & Black in the fifth. Illg scored her second run of the game (third of the day) in the sixth as Feeley and
Kailey Maksim added runs for the Orange & Black.
Husson Recap (Wartburg 10, Husson 2)
Husson struck first in the game, scoring the first run on a single to right field. Husson took a 2-0 lead over the Knights with the final run of the day coming in the top of the third.
Maksim added the Knights first run from Springer's RBI double. Springer and Brecht put the Knights in the lead, scoring of Link's RBI double to center. Feeley added a fourth run in the fourth on Springer's RBI single, taking a 4-2 lead for Wartburg. Brecht, Ella Kittleson, Illg, Frerichs, Happ, and
Tarah Wehde scored consecutive runs in the fifth inning for the Knights to secure the victory.
Geneva Recap (Wartburg 9, Geneva 3)
Wehde bunted to the pitcher in the first, sending Springer across home plate for the first run of the game. A sac bunt from Illg would send Fellows over the plate, as the Knights took a 2-0 lead.
Geneva got on the board in the second, on a RBI single down the left field line.
Brecht added another steal to her plate, stealing home in the third for the Knights. The Knights added four runs in the third. Frerichs got on base due to a defensive error by Geneva as Wehde scored for the Orange & Black. As Frerichs stole second, Illg stole third and scored. Happ hit a double to left field for an RBI as Frerichs put the Knights up 6-1. Fellows hit an RBI single in the fourth (Springer scored) before crossing home plate on a Wehde sac fly RBI.
A fielder's choice in the fourth saw Geneva score two runs. Neither team would score in the later innings until Feeley hit a sac bunt for Frerichs second run of the game.
Following the trip south, the Knights will compete at the Schutt Invite March 12-13 in St. Louis, Missouri.
